Understanding and Maintaining Your Locs

Shampooing Your Locs

One thing I recommend is shampooing your locs every 2 weeks, after you first start your locs for at least the first year. This gives your locs an opportunity to mature and loc effectively. Once your locs become more mature you can begin washing them more regularly. I usually start with Olaplex Clarifying Shampoo, which is great for removing product build up, excess oil, and hard water minerals. I typically follow up with a hydrating shampoo. I love Biolage Ultra Hydrating Shampoo. Avoid conditioning your locs until they mature. Once they mature you can condition using Biolage Ultra Hydrating Conditioner.

Drying Your Locs

Drying your locs after shampooing is essential. This will prevent mold or mildew forming within your locs. Towel dry your locs in small sections to ensure you get most of the moisture out of your locs. I recommend investing in a hooded dryer to dry your locs and to help get the rest of the moisture out of your locs.

Moisturize Your Locs

I recommend using Mizani Rose H20 Hairdress Cream to moisturize your locs. It is a water based moisturizing cream, that is light weight and very moisturizing. Apply a small amount directly on your scalp, between your locs at night before you wrap your locs. Not only will this cream moisturize your scalp, but it has anti-inflammatory properties that will decrease dandruff and increase scalp circulation. If you are experiencing more dryness, I also recommend Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil. This oil to your locs will help prevent your locs from drying out and potentially breaking. Apply a small amount to your locs every couple days to prevent dry and brittle locs that break.

Wrap Your Locs

Be sure to wrap your locs at night in order to preserve your style and protect your locs. Your locs are susceptible to breakage and friction while sleeping, so definitely invest in a satin scarf.
